The incredibly popular Asian destinations of Japan and South Korea have recently announced new digital nomad visas that will make it possible for remote workers to temporarily relocate to the countries.

This is attractive for several reasons. Both Japan and South Korea are renowned for their incredible sites and culture, and they boast lower costs of living than the average cost of living in the USA. If you’re ready to join the 35 million expats already working around the world, read on.

Japan’s New Digital Nomad Visa

Japan’s new digital nomad visa program is expected to begin in March and will be available to residents of 49 different countries, including those from the USA. Applicants can either be remote workers or self-employed, and they are allowed to bring their spouses and dependent children.

In order to qualify, you must have an annual income of at least $68,300 USD, and you will be required to provide your own private health insurance coverage. If approved, you’ll be allowed to work in Japan for up to six months under the new digital nomad visa.

South Korea’s New Digital Nomad Visa

The new digital nomad visa being offered by South Korea has one distinct advantage: length. Those who qualify for the visa can live and work in South Korea for up to two years. In order to qualify, you’ll need to prove that you earn at least $65,000 USD annually. You’ll also have to provide proof of private health insurance, proof of employment status, and a clean criminal background check.

Regardless of which country you choose, be sure to take the time to choose the right insurance plan first. Travel medical insurance can be a good choice for shorter stays. But if you plan to stay longer, the greater benefits offered by expatriate health insurance are typically the better option for digital nomads.
